Rams we have for sale
The base of the modern Merrydowns is the combination of the best 80 ewes from the Wainfleet Stud and the best 150 from the Merrydowns Stud, and in 2011 we had the opportunity to dramatically improve our genetics by purchasing half the Totaranui Stud, how we went about this is as follows. There was a total of 1700 Totaranui ewes. We stayed at Totaranui in Paihiatua for 2 days, (this is wet cold country similar country to Merrydowns), we put the entire 1700 through a diamond, culled them on our criteria in terms of type, performance data, wool weights and eye muscle scanning data. We finished up with 900 top ewes, we then put them up the race and went one each way, It shouldn't be underestimated how exceptionally good the North Island Totaranui ewes were. We wanted to build a breeding base for extreme culling and we now have1100 Romney Stud ewes, This allows us to cull heavily, we only select the best 150 ram lambs for sale on type, performance and SIL data. Our ewe flock has Facial Eczema Bloodlines throughout the entire flock and 95% of the sires come out of the North Island. The Merrydowns ewes have longevity. Our oldest ewes are 8 years and they have still got a fleece of wool, a set of teeth and continue to rear twin lambs. Our 9 year olds went out this weaning.
The lambs are tagged at birth for accuracy of data and mothering ability, udder attachment and teat placement assessment. We don't do feet and we haven't had a foot bath for over 20 years.
The Romney rams are extremely grunty, thick, easy doing, structurally sound with good numbers. They have bloody good, medium/strong wool on them that fills bales. The ewes are shearing approximately 6.5-7kgs. with a colour between 0-2.5, and a micron between 38-40.
These rams are fully guaranteed, they are sold throughout the country and will shift anywhere.
The Halfbreds are by Malvern Downs and Nine Mile stud sires, 15-17 micron and we single sire mated them with our top 7 & 8 year old Romney Stud ewes. They were tagged at birth and weighed accordingly at 100 & 200 days and side sampled in July to assess their wool quality. It is worth noting that we only allow our stud ewes to have one single and if they have two they are culled and go to the Southdown ram. This means our fertility throughout the Romney stud is second to none.
